What Are Labubus?

Labubus are unique, goblin-like creatures crafted by artist Kasing Lung in partnership with Pop Mart, a popular collectible toy brand based in Hong Kong. These whimsical figurines, known as Labubu (used interchangeably in singular and plural form, like mochi or squid), are imagined as mischievous forest spirits equipped with bug eyes, fangs, and an overflowing chaotic energy—akin to someone who’s fueled by four iced lattes before lunchtime.

They inhabit the "Monster Family" universe—a magical, storybook-inspired world that tantalizes with its blend of childlike wonder and a hint of darkness. Standing about 10 cm tall, each Labubu figure comes sealed in a "blind box," adding a surprise element since you won’t know which design you’ll uncover until it's opened. This element of mystery is part of their appeal, with some designs being ultra-rare and highly sought after, often reselling for hundreds of dollars.

Why Are Labubus So Popular?

We're currently in the prime era of adult collectibles and consumerism, with Labubus making a significant mark in this space. It all began with Sonny Angels—those tiny, somewhat cheeky, cherubic figures with novelty hats. Then came Jellycats, the irresistibly soft plushies shaped like everything from lobsters to toast. Now, Labubus have joined the trend as the latest must-have item.

Collecting what some might see as "childish toys" is argued to be a way for adults to reconnect with their inner child and find comfort in nostalgia, especially during uncertain times globally. This trend is closely linked with the "I'm just a girl" movement. Many TikTok users embracing these trends are women in their 20s and 30s. In a world where aesthetic matters and serotonin is scarce, tiny collectibles offer a playful infusion of childhood joy into adult life. Like Sonny Angels, Labubu deliver the immediate dopamine rush of blind box surprises and the excitement of completing a collection.

They’re also immensely shareable. TikTok unboxings attract millions of views, and collectors meticulously arrange shelves, creating miniature dreamscapes. It’s a bit meditative, providing a peaceful escape from the chaos of daily life.

And let's not forget the fear of missing out (FOMO). Pop Mart frequently releases limited-edition series that sell out almost instantly, intensifying the hype. The rarer the Labubu, the greater the bragging rights you hold.
